The Electric Mercedes G-Class-2

Let’s get one thing straight   the new electric G-Class, officially called the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology, is an absolute beast. It’s more powerful, more capable off-road, and more refined to drive than its petrol-guzzling siblings. But does that mean it’s ready to replace the traditional G-Wagen? Yes… and no.

This is a vehicle that perfectly shows off why EVs can be better than combustion cars   instant torque, quieter drives, and mind-bending off-road tricks. But it also highlights the usual EV headaches: limited range, heavy build, and questionable practicality on long drives. So if you’re thinking about taking this on a desert road trip? You might want to rethink that.

Still a G-Wagen Through and Through

Mercedes didn’t mess with a legend. The electric G580 looks almost identical to the classic G-Wagen   bold, boxy, and iconic. You still get the upright stance and the classic vibe, just with some modern tweaks like a sealed-off grille and a charging port box where the spare tyre used to be.

Don’t like the EV-specific look? You can opt for the traditional grille and even slap the spare wheel back on the rear door.

Inside, it’s still unmistakably G-Class   high-end materials, solid build, and a luxury SUV feel. And since there’s no rumbling V8 anymore, Mercedes added something called “G-Roar”   an artificial growl that plays inside the cabin to keep the rugged vibe alive. You can turn it off, but honestly, it’s fun to keep on.

Off-Road Skills That Are Honestly Overkill

This is where the G580 flexes its EV muscles. It comes with four individual electric motors   one for each wheel   plus a special low-range gearset for extreme off-road control. That means instant torque delivery, razor-sharp traction, and mind-blowing control over rough terrain.

With 432 kW (579 hp) and a massive 1,163 Nm of torque, this SUV can rocket from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds   which is wild for something that weighs over 3,085 kg.

But it’s not just fast. It’s clever.

You get wild off-road features like:

It can wade through water, climb crazy gradients, and dominate rough terrain. The only catch? Most owners will never see a mountain trail. It’s more likely to spend its days valet parked at high-end hotels.

On the Road? Still a Bit of a Tank

Let’s be real   this thing is still a G-Class. That means it drives tall, wide, and heavy. It’s quieter than the old petrol version and smoother around town, but it’s not what you’d call agile.

It’s not trying to be an efficient cruiser either. Mercedes skipped “Eco” mode altogether. Because let’s face it   no one’s buying this to be economical.

The usable driving range is between 315–384 km, depending on driving style and conditions. The official WLTP rating is 473 km, but hitting that in real-world conditions is a stretch, especially at highway speeds or in hot climates like the UAE.

Charging isn’t bad, though. With a 200 kW DC fast charger, you can go from 10 to 80% in just 34 minutes. At home, using the 11 kW AC charger, a full recharge takes around 12.5 hours.

So, Who’s It For?

This isn’t a practical EV. It’s not for families, commuters, or budget-conscious buyers. The G580 is for people who want presence, performance, and personality   and are willing to embrace the electric future without giving up the G-Class legacy.

It’s a rolling statement piece   a mix of rugged off-road heritage and cutting-edge electric tech. If you love the G-Class and want something futuristic that still feels classic, this is it.

Final Verdict: Pointless? Maybe. Brilliant? Definitely.

The G580 is absurd. It’s massive, extreme, and nowhere near efficient. But it’s also one of the most exciting and unique EVs ever made.

Mercedes didn’t just electrify the G-Class   they reinvented it while keeping the soul intact. It’s packed with innovation, but still proudly old-school in its attitude.

If you want to be bold, go electric, and still take on desert trails in style   the G580 is your dream machine.
